This book really struck a chord with me. The Long Return isn’t just another war memoir—it’s a heartfelt and honest look at what it was like to come home from Vietnam and face a country that had changed. Col. David Scheiding shares his story with such openness that you can feel both the pride he had in serving and the pain of being met with rejection when he returned.

What I appreciated most is how he goes beyond his personal story to ask bigger questions—like how the military became a political tool and why attitudes shifted so strongly during that time. He doesn’t just tell us what happened, he helps us understand why, and in doing so, he gives readers a better perspective on the struggles veterans faced then—and still face today.

The writing is straightforward and genuine, which makes it very easy to connect with. You can tell this was a long journey for him, not just in serving during Vietnam but also in finding peace with himself years later. It’s powerful, reflective, and deeply human.

I’d recommend The Long Return to anyone who wants to understand the Vietnam era from a veteran’s perspective, or anyone who appreciates honest, thoughtful storytelling. It’s a moving book that gives you a lot to think about, while also honoring the sacrifices of those who served.
